Last year, Google launched a Google Live Captions as one of the most promising features in Google I/O 2019. This feature can help to detect English-language speech and generates captions automatically with the help of machine learning parameters. Currently, it was only available to Pixel 4 series, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3, Pixel 2, Galaxy S20, OnePlus 7T, and OnePlus 8. However, today XDA-Developers have found evidence regarding this feature make a way to phone calls.
In Android 11 Developer Preview 3 for the Google Pixel 4, the XDA founds that analyzed the newest version of Device Personalization Services regarding the feature to turn on over a phone call. When you enable this feature, a message will pop-out for all participants that will announce the Live Captions is transcribing the call.
Furthermore, an audio file will be played during the phone call, which will say the following line “Hi, the person you’re about to speak with has call captions turned on. They’ll see captions of what you say to help them listen along.” At present, the Live Captions relies on AudioPlaybackCaptureConfiguration API that doesn’t allow or capturing voice call audio.
However, the latest Android 11 developer preview may have new system permission that allows it to bypass this restriction. We’ve to wait for more information from Google regarding this new feature.
