Viewers and users are having a hard time with the videos being posted on the popular platform TikTok. Numerous of its videos were shared on Twitter, which promoted domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty, racism, and objectification of women. People began expressing disgust over some videos in TikTok, causing an overall degrading of the app.

The beginning of the TikTok controversy

CarryMinati, a famous Indian Youtuber, came up with the TikTok vs. Youtube Trend and roasting TikTok celebrities, lead to the popularity of Youtube creators and the degrading of the TikTok app. Faizal Siddiqui, a popular TikToker, created a video on belittling acid attacks against women, which sparked controversy and more hatred towards the platform. But the company has removed the controversial video and suspended Faizal Siddiqui’s account.

Phrases such as IndiansAgainstTikTok, BanTikTok, DeleteTikTok, and BlockTikTok have trended on Twitter in India. Similar incidents have reported in India where people have outraged over an app.

Suggested read: TikTok ratings came down from 4 to 1.3 stars. TikTok Ban?

Some people came forward with the fact that TikTok is only a “Chinese” platform. Simultaneously, several netizens have also pointed out that the app is being used to share objectionable content, including animal and sexual abuse clips.

All these faultfinding and backlash of people ended up a massive in the one-star rating of the TikTok app. And the app downgraded from 4.6 to 1.2. In between all this Internet war, a Google spokesperson said that the company takes remedial steps to remove unusual and improper reviews and comments when it considers spam abuse incidents. The guidelines of Google play specifies that it doesn’t allow users to manipulate the ratings of an app. This is one amongst the reason why google favored TikTok and removed the ratings that were not more than the mass attack against the app.

Current scenario

After removing one-star ratings, TikTok seems to gain a 4.4 rating until now. Unlike the change on Google Play, the ratings of TikTok on the Apple App Store for its iOS version aren’t showing any significant difference within the last seven days. The app had an average rating of 3.5-star previous week that has dropped to 3.4-star. Also, it appears that Apple hasn’t removed any ratings as they’re grown from over 11 lakh to 12 lakh in the last one week’s time. It seems that iPhone users have relatively not been a part of the brigading of TikTok.

“Keeping people on TikTok safe is a top priority, and we make it clear in our Term of Service and Community Guidelines that clearly outlines what is not acceptable on our platform. As per the policy, we do not allow content that risks safety of others, promotes physical harm, or glorifies violence against women. The behavior in question violates our guidelines, and we have taken down content, suspended the account, and are working with law enforcement agencies as appropriate,” said a TikTok’s spokesperson.

We have no updates about the number of content moderators ByteDance has and how actively they eliminate sensitive content since this isn’t the first time they are disappointing us. So we’ll have to see how the scenario will be in the future. TikTok has been banned once in India due to pornographic and assault contents, but then it was lifted a week later.

There are also speculations and doubts regarding the app’s usage of the massive amount of user data. Many people criticize the app’s privacy policy and the method they collect the user’s location. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has a research arm called AI Lab, so we aren’t sure how transparent their motives are on using the massive amount of user-generated data and the purpose of its usage.
